How trips from McLeod Ganj differ

A trip can mean a walk in town, a trek on a mountain trail or a drive into the Kangra Valley. They differ in where they start, how much is walking and how much is driving, and which permissions apply. The table below compares the main options by those points. It compares routes, not individual packages.

Distances come from district and local sources, and several are older than 2025. They are rough guides, not measured trail lengths. Many figures are quoted from Dharamshala, not from McLeod Ganj, so add the ride up or down the hill.

Indrahar is a separate high trek, not a longer Kareri day. The Masroor temples are 8th-century rock-cut Hindu temples in Nagara style, and they are a different excursion from Kangra Fort.

What to check before you book

Compare these points for every offer.

Start and real destination

Ask where you meet, where you actually go and how much is walking. A "Triund trip" can start in Dharamkot, and a "Kangra trip" can mean the fort, a museum or Masroor. These are different places with different tickets.

Altitude and weather call-off

Triund and Kareri are around 2,900 m, Indrahar is above 4,000 m. Ask what happens if the weather turns, and who decides. Never go to a pass in snow.

Weather โ†’

Permission, fees and camping

Ask who arranges police permission, the forest fee and the waste deposit, and where an overnight stay is allowed. A January 2026 order reportedly required police permission for Triund and Kareri and banned routes above 3,000 m, and whether it still applies is open. Camping packages online do not prove that camping is permitted.

Triund rules โ†’

Guide and group

The UK FCDO advises trekking in a group with a reputable local guide, on established routes, and checking any special permits. It also suggests you tell your accommodation your route and return time.

Insurance and equipment

The FCDO says insurance should cover altitudes above 2,400 m and mountain and helicopter rescue. A satellite phone or GPS device needs prior Indian permission.

Transfers

Ask whether the price includes the drive to the trailhead, and when you get back. For Kangra Fort, Masroor and Bir Billing, the drive is the bulk of the day.

McLeodganj trek: Triund, Kareri or Indrahar

"McLeodganj" is a common spelling of McLeod Ganj. Three treks start from here, at very different levels of effort.

Triund

The most visited, with paths from several villages meeting at the Galu temple at 2,130 m. The older district page lists the height as 2,875 m and as 2,975 m. A snowline point, Ilaqa, is listed at 3,350 m about 5 km further. That is a place name, not the snow level of the day.

Triund trek โ†’

Kareri Lake

A fresh-water lake at 2,934 m, often frozen from December to March or April. Take a taxi to Kareri village and then walk about 14 km. A frozen lake is neither an open trail nor safe ice.

Kareri Lake โ†’

Indrahar Pass

The pass is at 4,342 m on the border of Kangra and Chamba. Sources give the season as April to October and as May to October, which are general descriptions, not a clearance for any given week. It is the hardest of the three.

McLeod Ganj tours: frequently asked questions

Which tour should I choose?

That depends on your time, fitness and the season. A town walk fits a first day, Kangra Fort needs a half day with a drive, and Triund or Kareri need a full day or more on foot. The table above compares routes, not providers.

Do I need a guide for Triund?

Ask locally whether a guide is required on your dates. The FCDO advises going in a group with a reputable local guide and checking any permits.

How far is Kangra Fort from McLeod Ganj?

A local guide gives about 20 km and 45 minutes from Dharamshala, plus the ride down from McLeod Ganj, which can take 20 to 30 minutes by taxi. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours at the fort.

Is paragliding in Bir Billing possible all year?

No. Press reports describe a ban on tandem and solo flights from 15 July to 15 September 2026. Flights depend on conditions and approval. See Bir Billing.

Can I trek to the Indrahar Pass in winter?

It is not advisable. Season descriptions run from April or May to October, and any trek above 3,000 m needs a check of the current rules and snow. Do not go to a pass in snow.
