Norbulingka Institute at a glance
Norbulingka Institute is a Tibetan cultural center. It teaches and practices traditional arts, including thangka painting, statue making, wood carving and textile crafts. The address is PO Sidhpur, Dharamshala. That is outside the center of McLeod Ganj, so treat the visit as a separate trip and not as a stop on a walk through town.
The grounds include a landscaped garden with water channels and ponds, and a temple. A separate Losel Doll Museum is part of the visitor offer. Nothing on the institute's pages says that one ticket covers every part, so ask at the entrance what your entry includes.

Visiting hours and entry
The institute's own pages differ in some details. This table shows what each says.
| Topic | What the institute says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Opening hours | 9:00 to 17:00, seven days a week | Arrive well before 17:00 |
| Closing time | Another page by the same operator gives 17:30 | Do not plan on the later time |
| Entry fee | INR 50 at the entrance (one page, 2026) | Confirm at the gate, as there is no full price list for 2026 |
| Holiday closures | A Losar closure on 28 February 2025 was posted | Check before you go, dates change each year |
| Workshops | Workshop closing days were posted for 2024 | Ask whether the workshops are working on your day |
The campus and the workshops are different parts of a visit. Even when the gardens are open, the workshops may follow their own calendar.

What to see
The grounds are a mix of gardens, a temple and working studios.
Gardens and water
The institute describes its grounds as a garden with water channels and ponds. Allow time to walk through it before the workshops, and use the paths as marked.
Thangka painting
Thangka are Tibetan scroll paintings made with mineral pigments. The painting school at the institute works with bowls of pigment, as the photo below shows. Ask permission before you photograph artists at work.
Statues, wood and textile
The institute lists statue making, wood carving and textile crafts next to painting. Which workshops you can see on your visit depends on the day, so ask on arrival.
The temple
The Buddhist temple is part of the campus. Follow the signs for shoes and photographs, as you would at any temple.
Losel Doll Museum
This separate museum is listed in the visitor offer. Whether it is covered by the entry fee is not clear from the institute's pages, so ask at the ticket desk.
Planning your trip
Norbulingka lies in Sidhpur, so check with your accommodation how you will get there and back, and agree on a return before you set off. Our getting there guide covers the main bus and taxi options around Dharamshala.
Arrive in the morning if you can. That leaves time for the gardens, the temple, the workshops and the museum, and it keeps you away from the closing time that the institute's pages give differently.
If you want a second excursion, the Kangra Fort is another day trip outside the center. For Tibetan life in town, read about Little Lhasa.

Before you go
- Check the hours twice. The institute's pages give 17:00 and 17:30 as the closing time. Leave enough time to see the workshops before either.
- Ask what your ticket covers. The gardens, the temple, the workshops and the Losel Doll Museum are listed as separate parts of the visit.
- Do not copy old closure dates. The Losar closure on 28 February 2025 and the workshop closing days for 2024 are past dates. They show that closures happen, not when they happen in 2026.
- Ask before you photograph. Artists are at work, and the temple has its own signs.
Norbulingka is about Tibetan arts. If you want museum objects and exile history in one place, the Little Lhasa guide lists the Tibet Museum and the library with their 2026 opening times.
