McLeod Ganj in a nutshell

McLeod Ganj is a suburb of Dharamshala in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. The district administration gives a mean altitude of 2,082 m and calls the place "Little Lhasa". You will also see it spelled McLeodganj, and "Dharamsala" is a common variant of Dharamshala. Locally, Upper Dharamshala means McLeod Ganj and the lower town is Dharamshala proper.

This guide covers the town and what you can reach from it: the Tsuglagkhang complex with the Dalai Lama Temple, Tibetan institutions, the Triund trek, Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Naddi and Dal Lake, Norbulingka, Kangra Fort and Bir Billing. It is an independent site, not run by the Central Tibetan Administration, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a tourism department or any tour operator. Fees are in Indian rupees (₹) as listed in 2026, and they change.

What the town is known for

Three reasons most people come.

The Tsuglagkhang complex

The temple, the Namgyal monastery and the residence of the Dalai Lama form one ensemble. The residence is not open to visitors. The temple courtyard and halls are the normal visit, and teachings are a separate matter with their own registration.

Tibetan exile life

The Central Tibetan Administration and several institutions work in the area, many of them in Gangchen Kyishong. Some are open to visitors, others are offices or schools and not a tourist stop.

Trails above the town

Paths from Dharamkot, Bhagsunag and Dal Lake join at the Galu temple on the way to Triund. Longer treks lead to Kareri Lake and the Indrahar Pass. Rules for these routes changed in 2026, so read the notes below.

Good to know before you go

Where older guides and listings are out of date.

The Tibet Museum is not in the temple

The museum operator lists the museum in Gangchen Kyishong near the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, with adults paying ₹20 and under-18s free in 2026. An older tourism listing still says "in the Tsuglagkhang, ₹5". Plan for the first.

Teachings need registration

A teaching is not a spontaneous temple visit. Registration happens on site, costs ₹10 and needs document copies. There is no online pre-registration.

Teachings and audiences →

Triund: a deposit, not an entrance fee

A press report says that since 11 August 2026 hikers pay a refundable ₹500 waste deposit in addition to the existing access system. You get it back if you bring your non-biodegradable waste down in the bag and show your entry receipt.

Triund rules →

Trekking is not simply permit-free

A report on an order of 6 January 2026 describes police permission for Triund and Kareri and a ban on routes above 3,000 m. Whether it still applies on your dates is open, so ask your guide or hotel before you plan a trek.

Dal Lake can be low

The district page describes the small lake as sometimes drying out in early 2026. Do not plan a boat ride or a full lake for photos.

Naddi and Dal Lake →

The airport has a bus

A new HRTC minibus from Kangra Airport at Gaggal was reported in March 2026, so a taxi is no longer the only option. Check the current timetable before you rely on it.
