McLeod Ganj as Little Lhasa
McLeod Ganj is the upper part of Dharamshala (also spelled Dharamsala) in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. You will see it written as McLeodganj as well. The district administration lists "Little Lhasa" and "Dhasa" as other names for the town. The name is a nickname. It does not mean the town has anything to do with Lhasa in Tibet, it only reflects how many Tibetan institutions are based here.
This guide uses the term Tibetan exile community and the full names of institutions, such as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). The sections below cover what you can actually visit: the Tibet Museum, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives and the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. A few places, like schools and government offices, are not visitor attractions, and the page says so.

The Tibet Museum
The Tibet Museum is on the grounds of the Central Tibetan Administration in Gangchen Kyishong, next to the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. Its own visitor page gives the second floor of the T-Building. Plan it as a separate stop, not as part of the temple visit.
Some older listings place the museum inside the Tsuglagkhang complex and quote INR 5. The operator's own visitor page for 2026 names Gangchen Kyishong and INR 20, so use those details. A documentary screening costs an extra INR 20. Groups are asked to contact the museum in advance.
The museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00 with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00. It closes on Saturdays and on listed holidays. Sunday is not its weekly day off. The remaining closures for 2026 are 1 November, 10 December, 15 December and 16 December.

Library, administration and schools
Not every Tibetan institution is set up for visitors. This is how they differ.
Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
The library is a separate institution in Gangchen Kyishong. It works from 9:00 to 17:00 with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00. It is closed on Sundays, on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Saturday of every month, and on official holidays, so the first Saturday of a month can be a working day. Its 2026 holiday list includes 1 November and 10 December. Do not assume the library keeps the museum's hours.
Central Tibetan Administration
The CTA includes a parliament in exile, the Kashag (cabinet) and several departments. Many of them have addresses in Gangchen Kyishong. These are working offices. Being in the area does not give you a general right to enter them, so contact an office first if you have a reason to visit.
Tibetan Children's Village
The Tibetan Children's Village (TCV) is a nonprofit that educates and cares for Tibetan children. Its seat is in Dharamsala Cantt. The organization asks sponsors who visit to respect family and school routines and to keep visits short. That is a rule for sponsors, not a general invitation for tourists.
The temple complex
The Tsuglagkhang temple, the Namgyal monastery and the residence of the Dalai Lama form one ensemble. The residence is not open to visitors. For teachings you need to register in person, and the temple page explains how.
Visiting respectfully
Tibetans in McLeod Ganj live and work in the places you pass through. A few habits help.
- Children are not an attraction. Do not walk into a school, join a class or photograph pupils without an arrangement made through the institution.
- Ask before you photograph people. Monks, elders and shopkeepers are not part of the scenery.
- Keep to the rules of each place. Signs and staff instructions at the temple and the museum take priority over any guide, including this one.
- Be careful with politics. You are a guest. Listen first before you comment on sensitive topics.

Little Lhasa: frequently asked questions
Why is McLeod Ganj called Little Lhasa?
It is a nickname used for the town, which the district administration also lists. It points to the Tibetan institutions based here. It does not mean the town is a copy of Lhasa in Tibet.
Is the Tibet Museum inside the Dalai Lama temple?
According to the museum's own visitor page, no. It is in Gangchen Kyishong, on the second floor of the T-Building near the library. Some older listings still give the temple complex as its location.
When is the Tibet Museum closed?
It closes on Saturdays and on listed holidays. The remaining dates for 2026 are 1 November, 10 December, 15 December and 16 December. Sunday is not a regular closing day.
Can I visit the Tibetan Children's Village?
It is not set up as a tourist attraction. The organization asks visitors to respect school and family routines, and any visit needs to be arranged through the institution.
Is the library open on Saturdays?
On the first Saturday of the month, it can be. It is closed on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Saturday, on Sundays and on official holidays. Check the current calendar before you go.
